Date: January 15, 2024

Kick-off time: 2.30 pm GMT

Venue: Ahmed bin Ali Stadium

The match will be played at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Monday, with kick-off at 2.30 pm GMT for fans in the UK.

Justin Hubner is still in pursuit of his Premier League debut for Wolverhampton Wanderers but has secured three caps for Indonesia this year and he will be looking to impress in the first game of the tournament.

Ivar Jenner, presently plying his trade in Eredivisie with Utrecht is another player to look out for in the squad.

"There is a big gap in ranking between us and Iraq, our capabilities are different, and everyone knows it,” said the head coach Shin Tae-young.

“But we are still a young team; the youngest in the group, but we have massive potential. We are building up not only our potential but also our results. Nobody knows what can happen tomorrow.”

Jesus Casas faces the task of selecting from a diverse pool of players at the Asian Cup, featuring a blend of youthful talent and seasoned campaigners.

Akam Hashim stands as the sole player in the squad without an international appearance for Iraq, while Montader Madjed recently earned his first cap in a friendly loss against South Korea.

Regarding his first XI, Casas said: “There are a lot of factors to decide our starting XI, it’s not all about the last two matches. Of course, the players who played the friendlies have more chances, but it’s not the only decisive factor.”

Defender Saad Natiq remains doubtful for the first game but the rest of the squad is available for selection.

Hosted by defending champions Qatar, the AFC Asian Cup 2023 will see the continent’s biggest teams go for glory. Why '2023'? The tournament was originally set for last summer, but high temperatures saw the tournament postponed until 2024.

It's been a thrilling start to the tournament with yesterday's action producing 15 goals as the UAE, Iran and Japan all secured impressive wins. Let's hope for more of the same today as one of the favorites to lift the title, South Korea, get their campaign underway.

Qatari supporters had little to cheer after losing all three matches at the 2022 World Cup, but there is a sense of expectation among supporters ahead of the AFC Asian Cup. The Maroons defeated four-time winners Japan 3-1 in the 2019 final and will be desperate to repeat that success under new manager Tintín Márquez.

Japan and South Korea, however, have some serious firepower at their disposal. Heung-min Son and Hee-chan Hwang have scored a total of 22 goals in the Premier League so far this season, and the Samurai Blue are captained by Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo.

The tournament format sees 24 teams from the Asian Football Confederation, which includes countries from Oceania and the Middle East, split into six groups of four with the top two — and the four best-ranked third teams — progressing to the last 16. Then it’s a straight knockout until the final at the near 89,000-capacity Lusail Stadium.

The tournament will then run for a month until the champions of Asia are crowned following the final on February 10. In total, 24 nations will compete for the prize, which has been won by only nine different countries since its inception in 1956.

Qatar are the holders, having won the trophy for the first time in 2019, but they are not among the favourites for success in 2024. Four-time champions Japan, captained by Liverpool's Wataru Endo, are considered the top contenders alongside a South Korea side boasting the star talents of Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in and Kim Min-jae.
